Udāna Sutta

At Sāvatthi. The Blessed One uttered this verse:

“It might not be, it might not be for me, it will not be for me.” Resolving thus, a monk cuts off the five lower fetters.”

Then a certain monk asked the Blessed One to explain.

Here, monk, an uninstructed ordinary person regards form as self, feeling as self, perception as self, mental formations as self, consciousness as self. He does not understand as it really is that they are impermanent, unsatisfactory, and not-self.

A well-instructed person understand the five aggregates as they really are, and thus is able to cut off the five lower fetters.

The monk then asks how a monk should practise for the destruction of the corruptions in this very life.

An uninstructed ordinary person might become afraid regarding a matter that is not frightening, that is “It might not be, it might not be for me, it will not be for me.”

However, a well-instructed person is unafraid by this. He abandons craving for form, feeling, perception, mental formations, and cuts off the support for consciousness.  S.iii.55.
